Opposing the EHRC’s Code of Practice

We are extremely concerned about the impact that the EHRC’s Code of Practice will have on trans, non-binary, and intersex people, along with people whose appearance does not conform to societal expectations of gender. It is deeply exclusionary, further othering an already marginalised community and effectively excluding trans+ people from many areas of daily life.

The guidance, along with the surrounding debate, only serves to make trans+ people feel more unsafe and unwelcome. It has increased the risk of violence and harassment, and risks situations where trans+ people are forced into being outed against their will. That is unacceptable.

As a charity which supports LGBTQ+ people impacted by hate and discrimination, we wholly oppose this. We see too often the impact that transphobia has on our clients and on the trans+ community in general. People are already made to feel afraid to be who they are because of other people’s prejudice and hatred; this Code of Practice has just made it so much worse.

Nadia Whittome MP, with cross-party support, has just tabled EDM 240 – an Early Day Motion to disapprove the EHRC’s Code of Practice. Please click here for a brilliant template by Trans Actual or you to write to your MP and urge them to support this motion.

For all those impacted by the Code of Practice, we stand with you.
