Jason Arday should still be alive. Instead, a young Black academic, admired by so many, has died following incessant hounding by the media and relentless scrutiny that many strongly believe was racially motivated.
As well as his devastated family and loved ones, Jason’s death has left many Black and racially minoritised people feeling heartbroken, angry, and let down once again by an institutionally racist system.
We at SARI send our solidarity to all those traumatised by what has happened to Jason and by his death, especially to those who knew and loved him.
The @goodlawproject are calling on the Prime Minister to commission an immediate public inquiry into how to ensure a responsible press.
We fully endorse this. We know that other Black and racially minoritised people have faced relentlessly negative and destructive press and social media coverage that would not happen to their white counterparts.
This tragedy should never have been allowed to happen. The UK needs to do all in its power to prevent this happening again.
